Working for ARC of Alachua County for 6 years REALLY helped me get a grasp on the mentally impaired society. I was a live-in for 4 years and overnight staff for 2 years. I had to learn their mannerisms, what made them tick. I had to learn the things that would set them off and the things that would put a smile on their face. I had to learn their medical needs, their medication, and when to distribute them at the proper time. I had to get certified every two years in CPR, HIV/AIDS, and other programs that were necessary to work for the company. I had to perform housekeeping duties, such as cooking, cleaning, washing clothes or dishes, or running errands. I had to plan, purchase, prepare, or serve meals to patients or other family members, according to prescribed diets.
