As a young girl, I would often go to work with my mom. She has always been a very busy RN working as the Director of Nursing at a nursing home. To pass the time, I started visiting the patients, and I fell in love with the elderly. I started out by calling bingo for them or painting their nails but I quickly realized that many of them didn't have family that visited regularly (if at all) and that I had an opportunity to make them feel important again! I know that might sound strange, but I find them to be completely genuine, and I find their stories of their lives to be interesting and unparalleled. Besides the ones in homes that I have grown quite fond of, I have also cared for elderly family members. My grandfather has Alzheimer's and dementia and is, at times, very much a handful, but I wouldn't give up my experience caring for him for anything! The biggest thing he taught me is how to be patient! I understand how to calm down the elderly if they get confused and help them feel at ease again. I also cared for my great aunt after she had a series of invasive surgeries. Everything from meal prep to shopping to bathing.
