I love to work with elderly individuals. This started when I worked at Camp Dogwood for the Blind and Visually Impaired. This is a summer camp for blind and visually impaired adults. At camp I worked with adults ranging from age 18-101. I absolutely loved it. At camp we went bowling, played putt putt, pontoon boat riding, shopping, and even tubing behind the pontoon. But most of all I loved just sitting and talking with the campers. Everyone was so full of stories and knowledge. It was wonderful. Being around so many elderly people reminded me of my summers growing up when I traveled along the eastern seaboard with my grandparents. I hope to eventually turn my passion into a career and work with elderly individuals for a living.
Jennifer was employed at Camp Dogwood for the Blind and Visually Impaired for the summers of 2011-2014. Camp Dogwood is a recreational facility serving blind and visually impaired adults. We offer a recreation/vacation experience to people that may not otherwise have this opportunity. We are located on Lake Norman, and our activities include boating, swimming, fishing, tubing, water skiing, art, crafts, shopping excursions, bowling excursions, and horseback riding. In addition to staffing the various activities, our staff serves as sighted guides, assist meal service, van driver, boat driver, and in any other capacity that helps to insure the goal of providing a week of fun and fellowship for our guests. We are the only facility of this kind in North Carolina. Our campers range in age from 18 to 100+ years old. Jennifer worked as a counselor/intern with the above responsibilities. Additionally, she served ably as camp store director. She oversaw inventory, purchasing and daily sales. In 2013 she served as Arts & Crafts director. As crafts director she supervised staff, maintained inventory, assisted campers with their projects, and kept the craft area clean and organized. Her positive outlook and energetic persona is an asset to our program. She served as entertainment director in 2012. As entertainment director she maintained contacts with speakers, educators and entertainers scheduled to visit and perform at our campus. She maintained, organized and oversaw the daily schedule of events for the campers. She assisted our guest performers with their set up requirements. Jennifer is detail oriented, responsible and a good team player. She genuinely cares for the campers assigned to her and they appreciate her very much. She interacts well with campers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Jennifer has a warm and kind persona. She is good at anticipating the needs of our guests, a very valuable skill. She is punctual, reliable, and always happy to volunteer for extra duty. For all these reasons and more she is an important and valued member of our team. I have invited her to return. She is great with children as well. My son is a big fan of hers.
