I lived 24/7 for nine months with my 88-year-old friend. She had Dementia and Alzheimer's and a hearing impairment. We were best friends to the end. I'll miss her dearly. My responsibilities to her were feeding, bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, transportation, doctor appointments, shopping, light meals, domestic, errands, medications. We had much creative fun together also. We played board games, flash cards, popcorn movies, dinners under the stars, breakfast with the hawks, nature walks, flower arrangements, painting art, planting herbs, played the piano and sang, sat out under the old oak tree and reminisced about her good old days regularly. We liked going to Dunk'n Donuts for coffee, out for lunch sometimes and together to church. The last few months she required more medications, wheel chair and oxygen of which I administered. My own mother also had Parkinson's and Cancer. I cared for her helping to feed, dress and bath her and personal hygiene, repositioning and comfort when she was in the hospital near the end. Her wish was to get into extended care and so together we set about teaching her to feed herself without spilling and to be more self-reliant to make her wish come true. I learned what a resilient, courageous spirit these woman had to have to meet their challenges daily. My love, respect and admiration will always be with them. I'm passionate about making a difference in someone's life.
