PROS: Jacqueline worked for my grandma for 5 months. From morning shifts, to split shifts, to weekend shifts, she was flexible and educational in the beginning while we figured out Grandma's new life out of an assisted living facility into a working family's household. She was strong, compliant, clearly experienced, a quick learner, independent even with other family members working from home, a good communicator even when off the clock and overall reliable. Grandma's dysphagia created a hazard twice, and Jacqueline was able to jump into action with the Heimlich and restore peace. Her car broke down a couple times, but she always notified us and made it to work in a timely manner. She helped my mom take Grandma to doctor appointments on many occasions. CONS: There was a slight language barrier as Creole is her first language, and my grandma is not accustomed to non-American accents and some of our instructions may have gotten briefly missed or lost in translation, but it was nothing that couldn't get ironed out. She was pretty consistent in arriving 5-15 minutes late (luckily, Grandma was usually slow to rise, so it wasn't a big issue). Something that stood out is that after presenting herself in a fashionable interview outfit, she started dressing super casual (bonnet, flip flops, crop tops, etc) which we didn't mind, since it's in the home, but I thought it was unusual because all the other caregivers wore scrubs (besides one who dressed casually on Saturdays). Toward the end of our time together, she was often caught on her phone, giving Grandma extended naps. When I brought books from the library for them to read together, she said she couldn't read... I didn't dig into that statement, so we don't know if it was a misunderstanding or what. After a second reprimand about phone usage during her shifts, she said that she was a CNA and not a companion or an activities coordinator because she was accustomed to working in facilities that had staff to handle the various needs an in-home caregiver might fulfill, so she "knows what she's doing," she's keeping things "professional" by not being conversational and sticking to her phone, and she's still in the room for when my grandma needs something. She quit the job shortly after that: she notified us the week before that she might due to her availability changing in the summer, and then abruptly (She texted at 4pm that she would not be present for her last 7:30am shift the next morning), saying that she's applying to nursing school. I think she got burnt out. I would recommend her for short-term care, maximum three months.
