As a directed care counselor who has been working in Department of developmental services over 10yrs, working with individuals with special needs has been one of the most rewarding and eye- openingexperiencesce of my life. It taught me to be patience, empathy, adaptabili, y and the importance of seeing each person for their unique strengths rather than their limitations. One of the most valuable lessons I learned was the importance of communication - both verbal and non verbal some of the patients I worked with were nonverbal , meant learning to use alternative communication methods like pictures exchange systems or simple sign language. Celebrating a moment when a client successfully communicated a need or feeling was incredibly fulfilling. This work has not only deepened my compassionate but also strengthened my commitment to advocacy and learning to adopt my approach to meet each individuals needs was a key part of my I'm here to help.
