Years of personal and professional experience caring for disabled children and adults- all beginning with my own chronic illnesses from age 12. This includes caring for children with both behavioral and developmental disorders, as well as physical disabilities. For a period of time, I worked as a patient sitter at Northside Hospital assisting medical staff with supervising at-risk patients. I've personally managed my own central lines, chest ports, PICC lines, and associated infusions/injections. I have basic medical knowledge in first aid, CPR, and administering emergency or planned medications. I currently work at the VA but plan to return to school to become a Child Life Specialist. These individuals work with children to cope with illness, disability, and grief (usually in medical settings). My entire world view was changed by Child Life Specialists I met when I was a patient at CHOA over 15 years ago, and I hope to bring that compassion to others.
