About Helen

I'd describe my personality as calm, patient, and somewhat introverted, so quiet at first. I like working with kids because I love children and miss having my own at home. I'm a recently retired RN. I started working with kids when I was a teenager, I babysat frequently for family and friends. I now have two grown children of my own, one of whom is special needs. I have worked in our church nursery and have taught 4-year-olds and kindergarteners in Sunday School. I volunteer with my church's special needs program providing one-on-one respite care for kids with physical, emotional, and/or intellectual disabilities. I recently published a book written specifically for teens and young adults with intellectual disabilities. In my spare time, I like to spend time with friends, volunteer at church, paint, and do crafts. My skills include soothing babies, playing with children, reading to children, cooking and light housekeeping.
