Maya Angelou said something like, People may not remember you, but they will remember the way you made them feel. This word is at the heart of my work/ministry with caregiving--to build empathetic relationships by creating both comforting and stimulating experiences for end-of-life and dementia- challenged people and their families. With compassion, flexibility, and genuine interest I like to get to know the whole person, past and present, and meet not only their immediate needs but especially their emotional, social intellectual, and spiritual needs in a variety of meaningful ways.
Heidi took over activities for the memory care unit that my dad was in. She was there for about a year. She took her job seriously and always tried to engage the residents in the activities. She was flexible and aware if an activity needed to be adjusted for the residents. Heidi was professional, responsible, and caring. She cared about each and every resident, as if they were her family member. Many times, Heidi would go above and beyond her job description to look out for the residents. She came to work ready to do her job and give it her all. She was pleasant, kind, understanding, and respectful to the residents. Working with the residents was a calling for her, and you could tell that she loved what she was doing.
