The most important word in the English dictionary, for me, is Agape. This kind of love is a choice to act in ways that offer well-being to others. I believe that in order to be a quality caregiver there must be an inherent desire to put others first; to have a servant's heart. Caregiving is a calling, not a profession. I answered that call over 30 years ago, choosing to serve my country as a US Naval Hospital Corpsman, working with HIV/AIDs infected active duty service members. As a civilian, I have worked as a medical assistant in several different specialties, but chose to leave that profession to explore my true passion... caring for the elderly and disabled. I have had the honor of working for 10 different families over the past several years, part time/full time/ as needed, whose loved ones had various forms of dementia, cancer, cerebral palsy or post stroke. I have spent the last 2 1/2 years caring for a married couple, who have both passed on. Ready to give agape to someone new.
Heather took care of our parents in their home for over 2 years - mom until she turned 100 and dad until he reached 96. She was the most dependable, nurturing aide we could have imagined! Our father suffered from dementia and mobility issues and she performed personal care for him with respect and professionalism. Our mother had cancer and aphasia and Heather provided general care, readily assuming increasing responsibilities as mom's health declined. She always had a positive attitude and was a devoted caretaker for Mom's dog as well, which was of utmost importance to Mom. Her knowledge or medical issues was also a great asset. We would highly recommend her without reservation to work as a home health aide or in a similar role.
