One of my first nannying jobs was caring for my niece who was born with brittle bone disease while her mother finished medical school. While she was a toddler, there were OT appointments and exercises, and medical concerns. As she has grown up, I have been touched by how strong she is, and amazed at the challenges she faces as just a young child. Another child in my personal life that I often spend time with is an adopted child of close friends who has Cerebral Palsy and other speech-language and physical disabilities due to his neglect when he was in an orphanage. He has overcome so many obstacles in his short life so far and at only 4 years old, he is one of my personal heroes. As a public school teacher, I continue to serve children with every variety of special needs, and over time I have grown a lot in my knowledge of resources, strategies, and adaptive techniques. I love to see how these students grow and change over time, and I work closely with all special education staff: OT, PT, vision, speech-language, resource, CDC, and CDC-A to always grow professionally in my ability to adapt and include for every ability.
