I have formally nannied for 6 years now. I also have worked with children and adults with autism through relationship-based play therapy, personal care assistance, and as a 1-1 para for a school, inclusive of other neurodivergences and disabilities. I've learned in my work that the small, fine interactions are where the true connection seeps in. Children trust consistency and genuineness. I wouldn't expect a child to look to me for support if I couldn't make myself interesting or silly. For many, I have been a safe place. What a child needs but will never ask for is presence, compassion, and understanding. I set my own expectations to become just that. To paint a broader surface, one current happening of mine is gathering work to submit to galleries/gardens. I was shuffled around a lot as a kid and had to learn how to make my fun out of magazine clippings and recyclables/roadside treasures when there was not much else to do. I'd love to learn about you/your family's care/support needs!
