About Deja

We hired Deja to care for our infant and 2.5-year-old and, unfortunately, had a difficult experience. During the hiring process, we discussed our family’s needs and upcoming transitions, including our toddler adjusting to a new nanny, a new school, a new sibling, and both parents returning to work. Deja also had several opportunities to ask questions or decline the position, including during the in-person meet-and-greet, after receiving the offer, and during a trial day with our outgoing nanny. In the middle of her second day, Deja contacted us to say that she had accepted another position offering higher pay, even though we had offered a rate consistent with both the rate listed for the position and the rate shown on her profile at the time. This occurred one week before both parents were scheduled to return to work, leaving us very little time to arrange alternative childcare. We were disappointed that this change was communicated after the position had begun, particularly because we had transitioned our previous nanny out to accommodate an earlier start date for Deja while she unbeknownst to us continued interviewing elsewhere. In addition to adding yet another transition for our children. During her brief time with us, we did not feel the arrangement was a good fit for caring for both an infant and an active toddler. We had concerns about how toddler behavior was handled, including the ability to de-escalate tantrums calmly and confidently. Deja sent us multiple texts during the workday about challenges with both children, including the toddler having tantrums and the infant being fussy and needing to be held during nap time. On one occasion, the toddler’s had a tantrum and repeatedly woke the infant during a nap. Deja appeared unable to successfully de-escalate the situation, settle the toddler in another room, or place the infant—who mostly slept during the day—in the infant’s room or crib so the infant could continue sleeping. As a result, we returned home to assume care. In addition, Deja was 24 minutes late on her first day and 10 minutes late on each of the following two days. Ultimately, this was not a good fit for our family. We remain concerned about the professionalism demonstrated during this experience, as well as the alignment between the experience represented during the hiring process and the ability to manage multiple young children independently.
