My first child care experience was a nannying job for a 3-year-old (who was, at the time, mostly non-verbal) with autism. I took him on little trips to the beach, the playground, etc. and we worked on potty-training and speaking and swimming. It was challenging but enjoyable. I currently work as a Direct Support Professional at a day program for adults with developmental disabilities: we go snow-shoeing, ice-skating, swimming in the summer, hiking, etc. and we work on art and cooking projects as well as yoga classes, music workshops, and most importantly, we focus on increasing the adults' social and community skills. I love my job and I am interested in working with children with special needs as well!
