I am interested in starting a day program for individuals with developmental and intellectual "alternative abilities." I have worked for three organizations and have heard the frustrations of not only program members, but also their loved ones and care providers. Actively acknowledging the specific needs of individuals, listening not only with ears, but also being aware of social cues and body language is crucial to providing the best care. I have also worked in special education, and find working with children and young adults to be extremely rewarding and fun. Personally, I think our society and public school systems have gotten a little better at accepting people as they are. But I do think we still have a ways to go. It is a wonderful experience to discover ones special and unique personality, and to be able to see someone else discover it is truly a treasure and gift.
