I have been working with kids who have special needs for 10+ years. My brother is on the Autism spectrum so this line of work is something that has always been near to my heart. At a young age I started working with kids who have disabilities in the only way I knew how- church. I started a class for kids with disabilities so that their parents could attend regular service and so that the kids had a place in the church to call their own. Once in high school I became a part of the student committee that helped plan events for kids who have special needs such as the Special Olympics, Sweet Heart Dance, Prom, Monster Mash Dance, etc. My senior year I took things a step further and opted to use my electives to be a teaching assistant for the Life Skills Academy at Hewitt Trussville High School. Since then I have pursued a career and education in psychology and consequently have worked with individuals who have special needs in a multitude of professional capacities.
