I gave this nanny a chance for a trial/training day with our family, and she showed up 20 minutes late right out of the gate. When she finally arrived, instead of a simple apology and owning the mistake, she launched into a string of excuses: she “didn’t realize how long it would take to get here,” and then the real kicker—she actually argued that “it’s just a training day, not a real workday, so it shouldn’t matter.” We explained very calmly that punctuality is non-negotiable, especially when you’re being trusted with someone’s children. Being on time (or early) on the very first day is literally the bare minimum to show respect for the family’s schedule, the kids’ routine, and the fact that parents are taking time off work or rearranging their day to meet you. Her response? More defensiveness and doubling down that we were bit understanding because “it’s only training.” At that point we politely told her not to bother continuing the trial—we’re not interested in someone who views lateness as acceptable and then argues about it instead of taking accountability. If this is how she behaves when she’s supposedly trying to make a good impression, I can only imagine what would happen once she felt comfortable. Huge red flag. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere. Punctuality and professionalism matter, especially in childcare. This was a hard pass after 20 minutes of excuses.
