I have had over 5 years of experience with children that have special needs. Throughout high school I took a peer helping class, which was designed for children with minor and major disabilities to interact with one another and other students. In this class we learned how to help people with mental disabilities communicate effectively, how to effectively communicate with others, and the importance of compassion and understanding. I have also volunteered for the KEEN sports program (kids enjoy exercise now) for the past three years, which is a program where volunteers play games/sports with kids that have special needs. Along with this, I have worked as a caregiver for a girl with mild autism for the past year and half. My duties include showing her good self maintenance skills, homework help, etc. I have worked one on one with children that have autism, ADD, cerebral palsy, etc.
