Caring for the elderly is a family tradition of ours, going back to the early 60s in Northern California where I grew up surrounded by old folks at my grandmother's care home. My mother followed, then I and my sister have worked as caregivers on and off throughout our lives. They were always treated as part of our family, giving me the sense of having MANY grandmas and grandpas. Older people like to feel they are still useful, and in charge of their own destiny, as they have always been. I have a special feel for making them feel comfortable and in charge as much as possible, as I know they dislike feeling a burden or helpless. In working with Alzheimer's patients I have learned to project 'happy' and not to put pressure on them to do or remember things beyond their capability. I've worked with Parkinson's sufferers too, where the main thing is to be near in case of a trip-up due to imbalance. No matter what your needs are, chances are I've had experience with that in my 50+ years.
Abby Owen started with us as a private caregiver in August 2023 and quickly became an integral part of the team. Abby demonstrated the highest proficiency in the care of our client. Daily tasks included, but were not limited to, assisting with dressing and hygiene, dispensing medication, meal prep, and light housekeeping. Abby also maintained a meticulous record of her shift noting details such as vitals, client’s physical and cognitive status, fluid and food intake, and any general notes she felt pertinent. Her exceptional care skills were complemented by her demeanor and interaction with our client – always patient, professional and compassionate. In addition, Abby continually strived to engage our client in outdoor activities such as short walks, sitting on the patio and picking fruit, and indoor activities such as games of Scrabble and puzzles; all the while making sure our client was safe and comfortable. Abby also got along well with the other members of the team. She has a keen sense of surveying a situation and applying just the right style of communication and response. I came to rely on Abby as a sounding board for implementing new policies and procedures knowing that she would be honest in her opinion and suggest alternatives if warranted. I have no hesitation in recommending Abby for a caregiver position. I am confident that she will provide future clients with the same exceptional care she afforded us. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or require further information. B. Yates, Lead Caregiver
