Special Education Teacher Seeks to Assist Your Child

I graduated from James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA., in 2008 with degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Special Education, K-12. While pursuing my degree, I accumulated over 400 hours of hands-on practicum experience in Special Education alone. I have worked with individuals age 4-60 in a variety of settings, including public school classrooms (both general education and special education), after school tutoring, GED classes and summer camps designed to help individuals of varying ages and developmental stages continue working on both functional and academic goals (ASD ages 4-50, and Down syndrome, ages 5-9, specifically). I count my years of experience starting with these teaching practicum, although I have worked with children, as a babysitter, nanny and preschool teacher since I was 14 years old. I am familiar with basic sign language. I worked as a Special Education teacher (K-5) my first year out of college, serving as the primary instructor in Math and Language Arts for the majority of my students. I worked with students in the general education classroom assisting with state wide assessment preparation (tutoring) and in assessment itself. I have given assessments designed to help uncover learning disabilities, and I am familiar with how to read these reports. I also served on a state wide committee to promote the success and academic independence of students in special education programs. I moved to Arizona in 2009 to attend to family concerns. Private tutoring has proven to be a better fit for me than working full-time in a classroom, for now. I believe that the tools needed for learning come with less ease for some, but this gap is bridged with the right know-how from a teacher. The key to all learning comes down to two fundamentals: the student must be able to relate to content and must have the necessary skills which he or she can apply in an educational or functional setting. I have successfully helped others achieve this fundamental concept in many settings, age groups and with multiple disabilities present. I am looking forward to working with you or your child.
