I have been a student of music for 20 years. And to be honest I am still a student of music. My musical influences include Deftones, Elliott Smith, Led Zeppelin, Yann Tiersen, pretty much almost every band ever known. My teaching style can best be described as customized and flexible. My teaching philosophy can best be described by saying that I don’t believe in the tradition academic method, the student needs hands on experience and spend as little time on paper or books. In my lessons, you can expect to learn any goal you have set for yourself and I will help you accomplish it. I like to tell my students that music will never hurt you and never bother you to practice, but the instrument doesn’t lie. My favorite thing about teaching is the joy I feel when I see a student excited about what he’s doing. My favorite performance was playing a concert in Pasadena CA. My students love that I personalize their lessons. I primarily teach drums, but I can also teach piano, guitar, and recording basics. My approach as a teacher is to help accomplish my students goals. I began studying piano around the age of 5. Singing was a normal part of our household,, so I fell in love with harmonies at a very young age. Other instruments that I've studied are piano, flute and some percussion; the flute piano became my focus besides singing. With piano and flute, I have played in my high school jazz band, various pit bands for music theater, and in some Nashville, TN recording studios. Vocally, I have recorded with several groups and bands, did demo work for several songwriters, and have sung both lead and back-up in several bands including: cover bands, contemporary gospel groups, family groups, church bands/praise teams, and choirs. I hold an Associates Degree in Music-vocal concentration and have performed in various venues here in the States as well as in Paris, France. I am very experienced in both vocal and instrumental performance and have a passion for spreading the love of music to others. A native and resident of El Paso, TX for most of that time, he has performed for an eclectic mix of projects, including Praise and Worship bands, Christian and mainstream rock bands, variety and show bands, tribute bands, and even symphony orchestras and symphonic and jazz bands. He mostly performed as a classically trained oboe player and jazz guitarist during his time at the University of Texas at El Paso, where he is currently majoring in Music Education. In 2010, he began to focus more on songwriting and composing, and after failing to find an outlet for his music, he began producing and recording his own original music in his home studio which he continues to expand. Having access to a personal studio, Fern taught himself audio recording and engineering, which has exponentially increased his productivity and a songwriter and musician, and has given him a much deeper understanding of the creative process and music industry. Fern is an avid collector of guitars, amps, and effects pedals.
