The Chilkoot Hike and Float Tour is an active, family-oriented hiking adventure along the world famous Chilkoot Trail. This wilderness hike takes place in the heart of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park. Learn about the Gold Rush, Native Alaskan, and natural history of the region. Depart Skagway for a 10-mile (16 km) scenic van tour along the coastline to the Chilkoot Trail trailhead and then enjoy 1.5 to 2 hours of hiking and 40 minutes on the raft. The hike is moderately strenuous so please be in good condition. Have your camera ready for occasional wildlife sightings both on land and in the water. Get away from the crowds in Skagway and get immersed in the natural beauty of the Dyea valley during the coastal forest hike and while floating down the peaceful river.

When your cruise ship docks in Skagway, enjoy a shore excursion to see the best sights of the city and take in the views from the majestic White Pass Summit area. Leave the crowds of Skagway behind and visit Chilkoot Lake State Park in Haines. Your tour begins with a high-speed catamaran ride along the steep-walled fjords which connect Skagway to Haines. Over a dozen unnamed waterfalls drop hundreds of feet from both sides of the boat. Upon arrival in Haines, you will meet your knowledgeable guide for a drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park has it all: a turquoise lake surrounded by snowy mountain peaks, a salmon-filled river flowing into the sea, and important Tlingit cultural sights. Bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears are often seen here.

Explore the first two miles of the Chilkoot Trail with your naturalist river guide who will then row you down the scenic Taiya river in one of our stable 18' rafts. Once your float trip is complete, you'll enjoy a riverside snack and warm beverage. From here, we'll board back into the van and venture up the White Pass (north of Skagway) for sweeping views of towering mountains, glaciers and alpine lakes. We'll return back through U.S. customs and back to Skagway once we've made a photo stop at the "Welcome to Alaska" sign. **VALID PASSPORT REQUIRED**

Watch for moose and swans in the marshlands as you head up the Chilkat River Valley on this excursion. At the preserve, experienced raft guides await to begin your rafting adventure (not whitewater). You’ll float silently down the river aboard 18′ inflatable rafts – the best way to observe eagles drawn to feed on the plentiful salmon. Bears and wolves are also frequent guests at the feast. Board bus for a 30 minute ride on the Haines Scenic Byway into the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve to the river dock. On your narrated drive you will enjoy stories of the history of the valley. During your time on the Chilkat River, traverse many different channels and travel 20 miles into the wilderness. Your vessel is specially designed to travel on silt-laden rivers which is the only access to a remote roadless portion of the preserve. The preserve has the best moose habitat in the valley, although no guarantees, the chances of spotting moose or bears are very good.
