The Gettysburg Licensed Town Guides is the largest and oldest tour group in Gettysburg. With over 20 years of experience, our 15 tested guides are story tellers who engage the visitors with interesting aspects of Gettysburg, its history and its people.

How did the Battle of Gettysburg affect the small bustling town, & the people who called it home? As you travel through the Heritage Center, discover what life was like before, during and after the battle. This story of courage & turmoil is told through engaging 3-D videos, interactive displays, text panels containing excerpts from letters & diaries, artifacts & memorabilia.  The popular, "Cellar Experience," is included in the tour.  Experience what it was like for the townspeople who were confined to their basements, listening as the battle was fought around them. The tour concludes with the Award-Winning movie, "Gettysburg: Animated Map," which was produced by the Civil War Trust. The movie, which covers the three days of fighting, is a good orientation & overview on the battle. Bordering the Gettysburg National Military Park battlefield, the Heritage Center is an educational & entertaining experience for families and groups of all ages. Allow 1-2 hours.

Authentically furnished from cellar to attic, the Jennie Wade House is a shrine to Jennie and to life during the American Civil War. Beyond the battlefield's thunder, this quiet home whispers the poignant, personal tragedy of Gettysburg's only civilian casualty—a life extinguished mid-morning by a stray bullet. Just 20 years old at the time of the Battle, Jennie was kneading dough in the kitchen when a rifle bullet pierced two doors and claimed her life. Artifacts from that fatal day in 1863 are on display as well, including the artillery shell that punctured the roof of the house and a floorboard with Jennie’s blood still on it.

While history focuses on the famous, today we'll look at the ordinary people, especially women, who protected the vulnerable, cared for the sick and wounded, buried the dead, and made life as safe as possible for the families left behind as the men of the town went off to war. You'll discover the stories of women like Tillie Pierce, Jennie Wade, and Elizabeth Thorn, who have statues or houses named after them, as well as women like Mary McAllister, Sallie Myers, and Philinda Humiston, who are rarely mentioned in history books but had a major impact on this tight-knit community in some of its darkest hours.

During your hour-long excursion, you will listen to your hostess recount stories of Union wagon trains which stretched for miles along Baltimore Pike, venture to the haunted pond which lays below "the Lost Avenue", or as historian call it, "Neill Avenue". General Neill's brigade occupied these woods until July 5th, 1863, his mission, to guard the right flank of the Union Army and more importantly, protect Baltimore Pike. For the soldiers stationed here, the Lost Avenue was about snipers in the shadows, skirmishes in the woods, and withering gun fire from the woods, fields, and behind stone walls which killed or wounded more than 20 Union soldiers.
