There are several factors you should expect to impact the rate of pay. Once you've figured out the basic pay rate, see the following information to help you adjust the rate as needed.
Amount of childcare
Do you need a carer full time, part time, or just for occasional help?
If it's part-time, is it for the same days and times each week?
Is the job during the week, on weekends or some of each?
Location
Major metropolitan areas tend to have higher childcare rates than rural areas.
Suburbs can also have much higher sitting rates than rural areas, especially if they serve a large commuter population and are near a major city.
Number of children
Keeping an eye on 1 child is a lot different than watching 2 or 3 or more kids. Pay should reflect this. Your babysitter or nanny needs to control a larger group, deal with kids interacting with each other, and be more aware of group dynamics than if they're watching 1 child.
Additional responsibilities
Most child carers are happy to help with household jobs, as long as it doesn't interfere with their caregiving.
Asking your sitter or nanny to help with the laundry or to pick up groceries are examples of tasks that will definitely require extra pay. Expect to pay at least another £2 - £3 per hour in addition to the basic rate.
Basic tidying up and getting the kids a snack are usually included in your basic rate - just be sure your childcare knows what your expectations are.
Transportation
Is your babysitter or nanny required to drive the kids all over town for lessons or play dates? Is she using your car or hers?
If she's using her car, you'll want to offer extra compensation for the gas she uses while driving the kids. If she using your car be sure you provide her with gas money if the tank needs filling. Some families offer their childcare mileage compensation if she's commuting a long distance.
Experience
Experienced child carers get paid more than those with less experience. Paying more for experience can get you a sitter or nanny who can better meet your child care needs--and you get peace of mind too.
Qualifications
If you have a newborn or twins (or triplets!), you'll want someone who has specific experience to match your needs. Expect to pay more per hour than the basic rate in your local area. It's worth it.

I work as a nurse, so I do shifts, I work part time, I have days and evenings off in the week and every other weekend. I am more experienced at babysitting for children upto 6 years old.
Several years ago I was a regular babysittter for 2 girls ages 2 and 4 in their school holidays. This post continued for 4 to 5 years, I spent extended times with the family to help them on day trips out and got on very well with all of them. In the evenings my duties included creative play, settling the girls to bed and reading with them.
I have been involved in a Voluntary work project at an orphanage abroad, and have been 5 times there to their summer school, I was committed to seeing the progress of the children there and developed good relationships with them. The summer school ran 5 days a week during the mornings and was very busy, meaning that I had to engage with children of all ages and all different skill levels. Some of the children had learning disabilities, which meant that we had to find creative ways of communicating with them.
I have recent experience if looking after a family of 4 children including the youngest at 5 who has autism. I have stayed with them for a few long weekends of 3 days in duration.

I am a 25 year old nanny with 7+ years of childcare experience (Level 3 OCN Nanny Qualification), Psychology degree from the University of Surrey and am also a swimming instructor and athlete.
I am outgoing, caring and I absolutely love children. I am very comfortable with all ages - I am a very maternal person and have good instincts when it comes to childcare. I also have a young nephew who I have had the pleasure of watching grow closely and have learnt a lot from, on top of my various experience and qualifications. I have my own car with a full licence. Feel free to send me a message for more info such as references if required. Please bear in mind that fees listed are based on one child and may differ depending on specific requirements. I have had 7+ years of childcare experience, and have helped many families with varying needs, from newborns to teenagers, including celebrity and HNW/UHNW families. I have worked in many different settings such as in the family home and at various events such as weddings. I have worked in childcare abroad in summer camps and ski resorts, and also taught and coached children of all ages in swimming. Happy to discuss rates of pay. Thanks, Tegan

I have worked with newborns to young teens and have just finished working part time in admin. I would love to go back to childcare and am currently doing the following:
Babysit for 4 and 6 years old boys. Do trips to park, crafts and evening bedtime routine.
After school pick up for two girls aged 4 and 9. We do snack, crafting and games.
Companion to a lovely older gent - we enjoy short walks, coffee and cake outings, museums, occasional sleepovers.
A little bit about me … I am well traveled having lived and worked overseas (United Nations). My childcare ethos is positive reinforcement, kindness and caring. I grew up with ponies, cats, dogs, rabbits and the occasional ferret. Part of my work in Africa (UNHCR) was organising convoys for vulnerable adults and children, providing a safe haven for all and volunteered running child care clubs to allow parents to learn new skills. I would be pleased to hear from you if you require a reliable nanny with positive energy and kindness.
