How to spot fake email addresses

Scammers use realistic-looking emails to trick members—learn how to spot and report them safely.

How to spot fake email addresses

We’re always working to help keep our members safe from scams and suspicious activity. One growing trend we want to make you aware of involves fake email addresses designed to look real. For example they may trick you by sending an email asking for your personal information, and direct you to send it to an email that looks fake or doesn’t make any sense.

These email addresses often contain patterns that don’t make sense or may contain a nonsense characters along with a zip code, such as:

  • bvtgfujh67342trfkjn@gmail.com
  • iokjmnb67trfeds@yahoo.com
  • caremember12@gnail.com

They might look similar to legitimate ones (like Gmail or Care.com domains), and when you send an email, they don’t bounce back—so they can seem valid. But in reality, they’re fake or fraudulent.

What You Should Do

  • Don’t respond if you receive a message with an email that looks suspicious or uses an odd domain name.
  • Never share personal or financial information with someone you haven’t met in person and interviewed with them.
  • Report it to us right away (see How do I report a safety concern?)

Your awareness helps keep everyone in our member community safe. Thank you for staying alert and helping us protect each other from scams and fake accounts.
