How to juggle all this
By Kelly H. on Fri Jun 20, 2014 at 12:33 PM EDT
I'm currently going through a divorce. Was left to deal with mortgage and luckily have my 3 kids. I work 12hr swing shifts. Daycare cost me 400+ a week. And there seems to be no help out there. My credit is shot (thanks to the ex) and I cant seem to get any help anywhere. I cant keep asking my family for help with the kids. And my ex is a pain. I'm so scared to loose the house and always stressed. Any advise out there?

Why can't you keep asking your family for help?

They are getting annoyed. They say I need to get my life together. My family doesnt know everything my ex did an I built him up as a great father but behind closed doors he was horrible. My family doesnt understand why we split an blame me for it. I've told them about his indiscretions an thats part of why but they feel I needed to just get over it.

. I have a good job that pays great just horrible hours. If I quit an take a day job I'll never survive.

You have to lean on people for help. Family, friends, your ex, resources... Are there any younger workers at your daycare that may work extra hours for (hopefully) a little less than you pay the daycare? Ask them. I did that and it helped me out a lot for after hours care and transportation for the kids! I know what you mean about daycare expense! I pay $1,600+/mo for it here (for two kids). Get your ex to contribute to these expenses (court enforced, if necessary).

Thanks Bridget! I'm working on making him pay support. I still worry I feel so overwhelmed. I dont wanna loose my house but think its best if I do a short sale. I hate to make my kids move an I'd likely have to find a new home for the dog. I'm a child of divorce an feel horrible my kids have to go through it. I want it to be as painless as possible for them.

You may also try partnering with other single parents. When my daughter was younger their were four of us partnered and we did not charge each other since we shared in our childrens schedules and watching each other kids even sleepovers. I found this to be the most beneficial and it keeps family out of your business.

I know what it's like to feel overwhelmed and like family isn't there for you. It's lonely, isolating, and difficult. I can make one concrete suggestion about child care, and that is to get an au pair through Au Pair in America or another similar agency. You will pay less or only slightly more than you do for daycare and have more reliable help. I did that for a year while I was in graduate school and it was the happiest year of our family's life. After that, money troubles got worse & I couldn't keep it up. Also the kids got older. But what a gift it is to have another adult in the house who cares about your kids!

Does your family know that you are keeping the full story from them?

If I end up paying less that would be amazing. I'll have to look into it. It would be nice to have someone here. I am so afraid of sdoing the wrong thing an messing up my kids lifes.

I think they know most of it. My Dad an Step mom know but still feel its all my fault in some way shape or form.I've always been the black sheep. I tend to stay away an became a very independent person. I didnt have a great childhood but thats another long story. But thats why I've learned to rely on myself so no one can hold it against me or say I owe them.

I understand. Just make sure your kids don't end up paying the price for your pride. They love your kids, and even though it is difficult, the more time they spend with them, the better for everyone. We're wired that way.

But having a not-there-for-you family myself, I will emphasize that our au pair made my crazy life a really wonderful one. Stretch if you have to, choose well, but definitely, try it!

holy prophet is one spiritual man i would forever give regards to, he brought my husband back to me after my old friend tried to blackmail me to take my husband and made him divorce me with wrong accusation. But this holy prophet did a prayer that resolved issues with my husband and push the other lady far away from him. I am happy to have my husband back, this prophet is great. his email is holyprophet8@gmail.com, he really surprised me.
