First Time Hiring a Sitter..

Hello!
This is our first time hiring a sitter. My husband and I are having a date night soon but I'm terribly nervous about leaving our children with someone we don't know too well. In the past we would have family watch them, but we have recently relocated to the St.Joe/KC area and are left to start from base 1. Does anyone have any tips, pointers, things to look out for, or anything they suggest for our first time?
