How much to pay a sitter for an extended stay in an emergency situation?
By Jennifer S. on Fri Oct 2, 2015 at 9:30 AM EDT
I recently experienced an emergency medical situation while traveling for work. Surgery was involved so my husband needed to fly out to join me. A much loved sitter of ours jumped in to care for our children (got them to school, meals, overnight care etc...) while we were away. We want to pay her fairly for her time but are really unsure about how to approach this. Some threads about overnight care have suggested a flat overnight rate and a regular hourly rate during non school waking hours with the children, but there aren't any threads about care for an extended group of days. Feeling a little overwhelmed as we don't want to offend her in any way (so grateful for her) but paying more than a $1000 for the week (which is what would happen if we follow the overnight rate/regular daily rate model) feels like more than makes sense to me. Thanks for any input you might share.
