Annual School Auctions

I'm on the fundraising committee for my daughter's spring auction. I'm wondering if anyone has found a great strategy to work around the slew of gift certificates that local businesses seem to want to offer. I'm looking to figure out a way to make it appealing and not necessarily put a specific # to the item (after all, a $25 gift cert is just a $25 gift cert - I can't embellish that much!). Has anyone successfully found a way to pull together a basket - or grouping - of local contributions to make it appealing as a bigger gift? as in "a night on the town"?
