Childcare needed during school holidays for wonderful autistic 5 year old

by Sophie • York
Our daughter is five years old and has a diagnosis of autism spectrum condition. She is currently in her first year at a mainstream primary school with full time 1:1 PA support. She is very physically able, and is toilet trained. She is a smart, funny, cheeky little girl who is very affectionate with her trusted adults, and her PAs have remarked how much they enjoy working with her. The challenges are that her verbal communication is restricted to simple words or 'scripts', that she can get distressed and 'melt down' when she is feeling unwell, is tired, or feels her needs are unmet; and that she does not understand danger at all so needs to be watched very closely. We (her parents) both work full time, and we are looking for someone to help us take care of her during the school holidays. This would involve coming to our home in South Bank, and taking care of her from 10am until 3pm (mum would be out, dad works in his office upstairs). You would not need to dress, wash or toilet her. You would need to do interactive games and activities with her, supervise her while she reads books and plays with toys, serve her lunch (pre-prepared, just needs heating) and take her to the park or playground (walkable distance). Lunch and drinks/snacks throughout the day would also be provided for the childminder. We suggest a trial run for the right candidate of 3 days (5 hours per day, 15 hours in total) during the May half term holiday (the week commencing 27 May). If all goes well, we would then need intensive help over four weeks during July and August (the weeks beginning Monday 22 July, Monday 29 July, Monday 12 August and Monday 26 August (5 hour per day, 5 days per week, 25 hours per week in all). This post would suit somebody reliable and patient with a flexible schedule and the ability to work on the dates mentioned above. It is also essential to have a strong interest in autism and children with communication difficulties. Ideally we would prefer somebody who has established experience of working with autistic children or other children with Special Educational Needs. However, we would also be happy to consider applications from people who are working towards an academic or vocational qualification involving autism, who are keen to gain hands-on experience of working with autistic children.

Hi! I’m a disabled student and mum living in York and I’m looking for a personal assistant/carer to support me for some social hours! Payments would be through agency, as my social hours are paid for through direct payments from the local council. I have regular care slots for personal care, but my support team are struggling to find carers for my social hours through the traditional agency routes, so I thought I would get creative! This could include accompanying me to poetry slams, coming on day trips out, and other social activities. These hours would be ad-hoc but I have 20 hours allotted to use for this throughout the month. Flexibility is really important as just like anyone else, I don’t plan it 6 weeks in advance every time I go out :) I’m looking for: - A female carer/PA/support worker who has good references, is fully DBS checked, has experience, and most of all who is kind, friendly, patient and outgoing - someone on the younger side and/or who has autism/adhd would be a plus! About me: - I’m a poet, student and mother to an adorable 6-month old baby - I use an electric wheelchair, and have autism and ADHD - I love Disney, poetry, and cats Thank you so much!

Currently he does not want to leave thr house for any reason. I have an older child (18) but given Charleys extra needs I do not feel it appropriate to leave Charley in their care.
