About the business
Our goal at First Light Child Development Center is to enrich the lives of children, their families and the community we all live in by empowering the children in supportive ways and fostering a positive sense of self. Above all else, we respect the child as an active learner, making sense of the world around them and help them to;
Feel good about his/her self
Develop self control and learn non-violent conflict resolution, (problem solving skills)
Communicate his/her feelings
Make meaningful choices and develop his/her own interests
Feel comfortable collaborating among their peers and making friends
Learn good coping skills
All in an atmosphere inspired from the beauty, nature and respect of the "Reggio philosophy."
We believe children learn best through their "play experiences" by exploring, questioning and researching their environment to make sense of the world around them. We respect each child's play as being their "work". Because of this, each classroom is arranged with furniture and other materials to encourage active learning, independence, and cooperative play. Each classrooms pace is not hurried or rushed. Children have time to relax and explore the environment, selecting activities independently and enjoying daily routines. The use of many expressive "languages" to represent ideas, questions, and learning, such as clay, paint, dramatic play, music, graphic art materials and many more are evident in both classroom environments. This helps children learn how to manipulate equipment, art materials, and other resources in a caring, appropriate and independent way.
Children and educators work in constructing knowledge together through exploring and problem solving. Teachers support the children in making choices independently.
The emergent curriculum and small group work time is focused on the interests of the children and teachers collaboratively, thus making the education learned more meaningful, worth exploring for children, and helps foster a love of learning.
The voices of children, parents and teachers are made visible through various forms of documentation (Reflection panels, paintings, letter's, etc.) Communication and collaboration among the three partners of education-children, parents, and teachers is held at the highest level of respect. We always welcome parents to visit, share, and be involved in whatever part of the program they can and would like to be part of.
