I have been working in the social care sector for four years and enjoy every aspect of my role as a support worker/shift leader.
The area I have worked in primarily is Disability with PMLD (people with profound and multiple learning disabilities) which includes challenging behavioural issues, mental health issues, non verbal clients, wheelchair bound clients, all personal and health care issues and being an advocate for my clients.
My role as a Mencap Bank support worker involves visiting several supported living homes covering various times and shifts, working with clients with different disabilities, i.e., autism, PMLD, behavioural issues, etc., and where I would support my client with personal care, going shopping, cooking, washing, medication, appointments and activities. I pride myself on caring about what I do and its positive impact on the clients. I believe in building trust and effective communication between the client and myself is vital. I am committed to challenging prejudice and ignorance of others as I strongly believe everyone has the right to be treated equally.
