The majority of my teaching experience has been UK based, at the beginning of 2020, I found myself offered the exciting opportunity of teaching in outback Australia. I delightedly accepted the six months contract, which required me to travel to two extremely rural primary schools, as the second teacher. A slight side step from my professional interest (behaviour management), the opportunity was enriching and rewarding. I faced new challenges, which I approached with enthusiasm: a new curriculum, multi-aged classrooms and rotating curriculum maps, a different way of assessing and reporting on children’s progress. Following this opportunity, I entered into a home-schooling role for a Brisbane based family, whose son was struggling within mainstream education: both academically and behaviourally. Drawing on my professional interest of behaviour management, I was able to establish a classroom environment with a strong routine and boundaries. I developed a creative, engaging curriculum, with purpose, which focussed on allowing the young boy to develop his character and flourish academically.
