I have experience in teaching the topics, skills and strategies that are addressed by the new Common Core State Standards and I have extensive experience working with the following student populations: *Students with Disabilities: As a parent of a special needs child, my experience is both professional and personal. I know and understand the needs of your child. I teach special needs children within a highly structured yet compassionate environment, making deep personal connections that boost self-esteem & confidence, and make the learning process more effective. My specializations include: ASD, ADHD/ADD, LD, and CP. *General Education Students: Many students are experiencing difficulty with the new Common Core Curriculum-even those that were accustomed to achieving high grades are finding the demands of the Common Core Curriculum to be very challenging. I have studied the Standards closely and my years of working with so many children of varying abilities have allowed me to develop highly effective teaching strategies that ensure my students are learning at their very best (and enjoying themselves at the same time)! *Bilingual and ESL (English as a Second Language) Students (Russian/Spanish): I have had many teaching experiences that have included working with ESL students, both in the classroom, as well as one-on-one. Those experiences have allowed me to develop my knowledge of language acquisition skills and to develop highly effective teaching and learning strategies for ESL students that are both creative and multi-sensory. *Emergent Reading and Reading Delays: With optimal support, the average 4-year-old can become an effective reader! Sadly, many children are experiencing a delay in reading ability. These delays CAN be remedied-the sooner the problem is addressed, the better. I am familiar with many effective reading programs and I incorporate structured, consistent lessons and independent work that includes creative, multi-sensory strategies that are engaging and effective! *Highly Effective Mathematics Strategies: Being invited to travel the country to teach other teachers how to teach math most effectively is proof that my passion for teaching and problem solving has allowed me to develop highly effective mathematics teaching and learning strategies. In fact, my very first one-on-one student was a 5th grader who was struggling miserably in math. His test scores were hovering in the 20s. I began working with him in November, and by January he was back on track, receiving scores of 90 or higher! By the time he took the State exam in the spring, he was very well-prepared for the test and earned a very high 3! *Common Core Test Prep: I have proctored the State exams as well as graded them. I have also provided test prep for the ELA, Math and Science NYS Exams for many years. I have had students achieve perfect scores on the ELA, Math and Science State exams. Even in the spring of 2013, when the NYS Exams were changed to reflect the new Common Core Curriculum, my students did quite well-most scored in the 3 range while some even scored a few 4s! This was especially impressive as over 70% of NYC s children failed the exams in 2013. My experience with the 5th grader and his math (mentioned above) was actually what got me hooked on tutoring; I was so impressed with the progress that was achieved when working one-on-one! It is a totally different dynamic than that of the classroom. So, many years later, I am still tutoring and loving it! My students (and their parents) become like family over time, as I truly care about them and their success. Extensive subject knowledge, highly effective teaching/learning strategies, advanced memory techniques, patience, and a sense of humor combine to make the time I spend with my students very special-always fun and highly effective!more
