The past five summers I have worked as a camp counselor and later a program supervisor for a camp in Northern Minnesota that serves children ages 6-18 with special needs such as Autism, ADD/ADHD, victims of emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, learning disabilities, children in the foster system, etc. While at camp I counseled children on their choices and social skills particularly in reference to their behavior and how it affects those around them. I employed many different behavior management techniques and was certified in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention while serving at camp. I've made behavior contracts, reward charts, and behavioral and social expectations for the children I've worked with. I was also an intern with the Lovaas institute which consisted mainly of observing the behavior modification therapy and participating in positive reinforcement for the child. I am very passionate about working with those with special needs. I intend on obtaining my Masters of Social Work to allow me to expand my options and make a career out of serving youth with special needs.
