For the last 15 years, I have worked with special needs children with Down Syndrome and Autism. They ranged in age from 14 up to 21 years of age. I worked in a public school setting and it was a school to work program. In my earlier years, I worked as a Job Coach assisting the older students to various jobs in the community. After 3 years of doing this, I worked as a full time aide in the classroom assisting students with Language arts and simple Math problems. I also accompanied them to various mainstream classes such as art, gym lunch and computer classes. In these classes I observed their socialization and redirected them back to task if needed. I assisted them at lunch both in obtaining their lunch if they were purchasing and monitored them as they ate. After school activities such as sports and drama classes so students could participate with some extra supervision. Both the coaches and club leaders used my assistance when needed. I have always loved working with this community and I feel very rewarded when I get results with my assistance. The connection that I have had in the past with these students have been wonderful. Looking forward to reconnect again.
