I was the primary caregiver for my 89-year-old grandmother as she was recovering from double hip replacement surgery. Please see my elder care profile. I've also raised a son of my own who is now 19 and a genius. He tested into the GATE (Gifted & Talented Education) Program with flying colors but was never very interested in school. He was bored. Psychiatrists diagnosed him as ADD but I knew my son and knew they were wrong. He just needed an alternative learning environment. We placed him in a hands-on school with little to no homework, where the teachers were called by their first names. This made the teachers his friends instead of authority figures and there he thrived. He started getting excellent grades because he enjoyed school and the open discussions they engaged in and he even enrolled in junior college after high school! I foster parented a very special little girl for a long time. Her mother had personal problems and could not raise her. She was my special girl for 7+ years and it brought me joy to be able to be there for her during a difficult time without her real mommy. Although I'm happy that her bio mom finally was able to get her life together and be a parent to her again, I miss my time with her. Kids grow up too fast. I learned the value of being in the moment and cherishing it, for in the blink of the eye, it's gone and all that's left is the memory, and the love.
