My experience with caring for those with special needs began during college. I took several courses that focused on the special needs population. For a semester, I assisted two college aged individuals diagnosed with Down's syndrome. From there, I helped develop specific goals and objectives and together we worked on areas these individuals needed help with. After earning my degree in Recreation and a minor in psychology, I got a job with a company that provides services to adults with disabilities. I specifically worked as a program coordinator in a home of 8 men of varying abilities and ages. During the two years I worked in this position, I gained experience with the following: Asperger's, traumatic brain injury, schizophrenia, Down's syndrome, bi-polar disorder, intellectual disability, and one with OCD like behaviors. It was through this experience that I gained a passion serving this population. I am a compassionate person that is looking for an opportunity to help bring out the gifts and abilities each person has been given.
