My youngest brother was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when he was 2 years old. Now eight, he is a high functioning sufferer, but still requires a lot of attention and patience. He also suffers from severe ADHD, Dyslexia, and walking, hearing, and speech impediments. He has had multiple surgeries and come home with anything from picc lines, braces, and wounds that all needed cared for. My mother was a nurse before his diagnosis, so she showed my sisters and I how to help take care of him and all of these special needs. He is enrolled in occupational, physical, and speech therapy, which require us to do some additional work with him in these areas at home. He is on a couple of different medications which I know how to distribute correctly. Working with a special needs child requires a person with a great deal of patience and a big heart, which are two things my brother has definitely given me. I have seen him struggle in so many situations, physically, emotionally, socially, and mentally, that it made me want to make a difference. I am enrolled in nursing school and have a real heart for helping children with special needs feel "normal" and give effective care.
