For the past 7 summers I have worked as a camp counselor and activity instructor for children and young adults with special needs. The ages I have experience with range from 4 to 22. As a counselor, I personally cared for 1-3 children depending on what their specific needs were. The diagnoses I have most experience working with include autism (all levels of functioning), asperger's, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and ADHD. My duties included engaging children in camp activities, adapting activities to suit the child's specific needs, and above all promoting the safety of the children as well as fellow camp staff. I also aided in ambulation, feeding, and toileting when necessary. I love working in the special need's field, especially in the area of recreation. My favorite "go-to" activities include arts & crafts, board games, and anything outdoors!
