I dreamed of working with special needs children since I was 13 and would babysit for a young hearing impaired boy. I raised a son who has spina bifida and hydrocephalus into a well respected, independent young man. (He is now 29) I have worked at two day centers for developmentally disabled and physically disabled adults as well as some with mental illness. I also worked as a program specialist (float) for a residential company. While I love what I do now, my hope is for something more personal. A smaller setting I guess, or a position where I can concentrate on a smaller group so they get the care and teaching they deserve. In past jobs in this field I worked in medical homes. I did diabetic care, bladder/bowel programs, personal needs, community integration, amongst other duties. I'm currently working for a wonderful company,( M-F, 9 a.m. -4 p.m. ) I teach classes, help with personal needs and sometimes pass medications. I am currently looking for PM hours on Mon, Tue & Fri. Afternoon/evening hours every other weekend OK too. If the right position with the right family came along I would consider full time.
