My experience caring for a child with special needs began when I was 12 years old. A car hit my youngest brother when he was 1 years old. After spending 6 months in the PICU, we were able to take him home. I learned to clean and change a G-tube and tracheotomy tube, administer medication, handle seizures, assist in mobility, and most importantly, play with a child who has severe physical and mental disabilities. He began speech, occupation, and physical therapy along with many other doctor's appointments. Growing up, all of his doctors and therapies became normal to me, and I would take him to therapy with my mom often. During the summer of my freshman and sophomore years at TCNJ, I volunteered at a Center for Child Development. I shadowed Sebastian's physical therapist and realized that improving a child's quality of life, even just a little, is worth the effort it can sometimes take to get there. My long-term career goals include attending physical therapy school and specializing in pediatrics. I look forward to hearing from you if my experiences align with your needs!
