For almost 8 years, I have helped a young man with Down syndrome learn life skills and work toward maximum independence. At 18, he began talking about wanting to go to college. At 21, he was confident enough to move into an adult group home with 2 other house mates. It has been so wonderful watching him grow, learn, and mature. Many times, we took friends of his with other special needs to theme parks, movies, and restaurants. In the beginning, I worked 40 hours a week. Now, we have occasional dinner and movie "dates." I also tutored and "hung out" with a young lady with mental retardation, helping her finish her senior year of high school and study for and get her driver's permit.
