I grew up in a medical family, so care giving has always come naturally to me. During high school and college, I worked in a physician's office and gained "hands on" experience that was priceless. I continued working in medicine until my mentor retired in 1998. Then, I transitioned into recreational therapy and respite care. Most of the people who hired me were RN's who relied on my support while they were working outside their home. As a result, I gained invaluable experience in home settings, not only as a caregiver, but as a companion, friend and helper. I have worked with several people with physical challenges and have found that work to be the most rewarding.
