I have worked with people who have special needs my entire life. My aunt has Prater-Willis Syndrome, which I explain it as a cousin to Downs Syndrome because they're both due to Chromosomal defects. I have dealt with adult foster care, group homes, case workers, nutritionists, and social workers because of my relationship with my aunt. I have also volunteered at a special needs camp where I worked one-on-one with individuals who have CP. In this case, I was responsible for bathing, toileting/changing briefs, changing clothing, feeding, assisting in activities such as crafts and swimming. I have also gotten a lot of experience with those who use wheelchairs: lifts, transfers, adjustments, and I am somewhat familiar with the workings and technologies of wheelchairs. I went on a mission trip to Haiti and worked with a special-needs orphanage there and dealt with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities. I am also very involved in working with the deaf and hard of hearing in my community. I am proficient in sign language, and can converse easily. I am a compassionate and empathetic caregiver, and I have a special place in my heart for all types of special needs.
