I worked for three years with developmentally disabled adults. Most had significant behavioral issues and a few had various physical limitations and medical concerns. I learned that most people in the community, including professions in the medical field, have a very limited understanding of folks with various developmental disabilities, especially when coupled with any behavioral issues and especially when coupled with psychiatric disorders. I became an advocate for my people and enjoyed seeing them blossom and receiving the best quality of life. I also spent 1 year teaching 2nd 3rd and 4th graders with severe emotional and behavioral issues. These kiddos all had learning disabilities, several were what all would consider a handful and what many would just consider as having ADHD, one who definitely had ADHD to the point that he couldn't hang up his coat without having a firm and gentle hand on his shoulder.
