I have been working with and advocating for children with special needs from a young age. Starting in elementary school, I served as a mentor in special needs classrooms, helping students with creative connections art classes. My first significant experience working with children with special needs was when I was a counselor at Camp Michitanki, a summer camp for children who have been the recipients of organ transplants. Due to their medical condition, these children cannot attend a typical summer camp, since they often experience physical, mental, and emotional limitations that require extra, and sometimes emergency, care. In my role as a counselor I facilitated camp activities during the day, as well as managing the children's medical schedules. I continued my work with special needs children in the summer of 2009, when I had the opportunity to live in the city of Jerusalem. While there I volunteered for Aleh, an organization that serves as a home and school for the severely mentally and physically challenged. In my role at Aleh, I worked in a classroom helping students build their communication and sensory skills. Special needs populations often go under served and as a caretaker it is a great passion of mine to work with special needs children and give them the respect and care that they deserve.
