Meet Heather

I graduated from Virginia College with a GPA of 3.9. I have an Associates Degree of Science and have been a Medical Assistant since 2003. I have cared for the sick and elderly in a nursing home setting as well as in the home. From October1996- July1998, I cared for an elderly couple in their home. The husband had just had open heart surgery and the wife had Alzheimer's. I cleaned house, prepared meals, assisted the couple with eating when needed and gave medications. I also took the wife on outings like when I did the grocery shopping for them. The wife passed away in June 1998 and the husband just a few weeks later. It made me feel good to know that I was there to help them for close to 2 years and that I gave them company, companionship and caring. I also cared for the elderly mother of a friend for close to a year who had severe dementia and severe leg wounds that required bandage changes 2-3 times daily for months. She was unable to feed herself. She was incontinent and as long as someone was there to hold her hand and talk to her she stayed calm. I cooked and cleaned the home for her during the day while her daughter was at work. I had to feed the patient as she was unable to feed herself. I reported any problems to either the hospice nurse when she stopped by or to the daughter when she came home. I administered medications, nebulizer treatments, changed the patients diaper and clothing and changed the bed sheets daily. A hospice aide only came to bathe her twice a week and I bathed her on the other days and sometimes twice a day if there was a reason. I also changed her position in the bed every 2 hours to prevent bed sores. It has always made me feel good to know that I was there for her to the very end and that I was able to bring her a lot of comfort when she was obviously scared from the dementia. I also cared for a hospice patient for about 3 months in a nursing home facility. I fed her, changed her clothes and sheets and diaper. I turned her in the bed several times a day unless I was able to get her out of a bed and into a special wheelchair which elevated her legs. When I was able to get her to cooperate enough to get in the chair we would talk and or watch TV. I have worked in medical facilities directly with patients and doctors, ranging from pediatrics to geriatric medicine.
