Profile Of Rachel R.

I am passionate about human development and learning. I am preparing to become a child psychiatrist, and I want learning and teaching to continue to play central roles in my work. I have taken a broad spectrum of courses at Cambridge University, Wheaton College, Brown University, Rhode Island School of Design, and Harvard University. In addition to courses on human development, learning, and best educational practices, I took courses that would enable me to teach any subject in pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as many higher education subjects using active, innovative methods. I have 10 years of experience working as a tutor, teaching assistant, and teacher in private and public schools and colleges. In addition to core academic subjects, I have tutored individuals in music, art, sports, and standardized test preparation. I have tutored adults in GED preparation, as well as statistics and several areas of psychology. I work to develop individuals' confidence and desire to explore and contribute to their worlds. During my own childhood, I was given the opportunity for enrichment not only in traditional academic subjects, but also in art, drama, writing, several musical instruments, numerous sports, and foreign languages. I was taught the importance of learning about other cultures through travel and hosting exchange students. I was shown the value of giving back to the community through volunteer work and service projects. I try to give those I work with the same opportunities to develop their interests and use their talents to reach goals and improve the world.

Voice/Music/Theater Lessons. Juilliard Graduate, 15 Years of Teaching Experience

I hold a bachelor's degree in music education and a master's degree in vocal performance from the Juilliard School. For more than 15 years, I have applied that education to teaching music and performing arts to children in classrooms, small groups, and individually. I was a professional opera singer for several years after graduate school before deciding to settle into full-time teaching and outreach, though even while at Juilliard my concentration was largely on education. Since then, I have been the Dean of the San Francisco Girls Chorus and the Voice Component Director for the San Francisco Ballet's summer camp. I have been employed by the San Francisco Opera as a Teaching Artist, Trainer, and Research Specialist for two years. I have worked for many Bay Area organizations, schools and families during that time helping children to refine skills and talents, and especially to build self esteem and emotional expression through arts related avenues. I bring extensive experience with performance craft, including vocal production and theater improvisation to my work, and believe in capitalizing on the arts as a means toward joy and wonder for children: "If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life and if a child is to keep alive his inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the world we live in." -Rachel Carson
