One of my first experiences working with people with special needs was my junior year of high school when I volunteered as a Team Partner for Special Olympics Bowling for young adults. This experience inspired me to apply for a job working as a Direct Support Professional for people with disabilities at REM Iowa during this past year of college. My job entailed helping the individuals with their daily tasks (showering, eating, cooking, transferring into wheelchairs, etc.) as well as planning and accompanying them to enjoyable activities and events. I primarily worked with two great individuals (one fun-loving lady with a great sense of humor and a feisty non-verbal gentleman who had the greatest smile) with varying capabilities. Despite the difficulties involved in this job, it was so fulfilling and fun! I look forward to providing similar services to someone in the future!

Sol and I worked together providing services for individuals with special needs. She was quick to learn and very upbeat. The individuals she worked with were always happy to see her. Sol did very well with handling their personal care needs. And did well with finding activities to keep the individuals active and engaged.
